Wangen im Allgäu – An Unexpected Historic Gem

A quiet first stop with a surprisingly beautiful old town.

Story

We left our homebase on a Friday afternoon, the camper freshly packed and ready. The first leg of the journey was short but symbolic — the transition from routine to road life.

By early evening we arrived in Wangen im Allgäu and found a simple overnight spot near the local ice rink. Snow still covered parts of the ground, the air was crisp, and the mood felt calm.

Right next to the parking area, we discovered a Greek restaurant — warm atmosphere, genuinely good food, and exactly what we needed after the drive.

The next morning, sunlight filled the camper. Fresh alpine air, a small stream nearby, quiet surroundings — the perfect beginning.

Before continuing towards Lake Constance, we decided to explore the town itself.

And that’s when Wangen surprised us.

The historic old town is exceptionally well preserved — narrow streets, colorful facades, traditional Allgäu architecture, arcades, small cafés, and a medieval atmosphere that feels authentic rather than staged.

Wangen is one of those places travelers often pass by on their way to bigger destinations — Lindau, Bregenz, the Alps. But that’s a mistake.

It deserves time.
