Choachí – Waterfalls & Cloud Forest
Cloud forest, waterfalls and suspension bridges just one hour from Bogotá.
We left Bogotá by Uber, not fully aware of how quickly the landscape would transform. The city faded as the car climbed higher and higher over the mountain pass. The road was steep, winding, and at times rough. At over 3,000 meters, the air thinned. On the descent toward Choachí, the brakes worked hard. You could smell the heat after tight curves.
And then the forest began.
The dry highland plateau gave way to dense green slopes. Moisture returned. Branches were wrapped in moss. Thick, structured leaves caught the filtered light. Bromeliads clung to tree limbs, living entirely from humidity and air.
The waterfall area feels like stepping into a cloud forest. White suspension bridges stretch across narrow gorges. Water crashes through the rock below. The air is cool yet tropical at the same time — a rare combination of altitude and jungle.
Entrance requires cash. No card payments. The same applies to food and drinks. It’s worth knowing in advance.
After crossing the bridges and walking the forest paths, we stopped at a small restaurant near the entrance. The owner prepared mojitos with theatrical precision — stirring, presenting, almost performing. It turned a simple drink into a moment.
Clouds moved in and out during the afternoon. First overcast, then a perfect sun-cloud mix that made the greens glow. Just one hour from Bogotá — yet a completely different world.
