Quilotoa Crater Lake — Travel Essay
Some places impress you because of their beauty. Others leave a lasting impression because of the feeling they create.
Quilotoa was both.
Standing on the rim of a volcanic crater at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level feels almost unreal. The wind moves through the grasslands, clouds drift across the sky and the turquoise lake sits quietly far below in the middle of the crater.
What surprised us most was the landscape surrounding the volcano. Instead of barren mountain slopes, the entire region was covered in deep green vegetation.
The highlands looked alive, shaped by ancient volcanic forces that carved deep valleys and dramatic ridges into the terrain.
Walking along the crater rim felt both peaceful and powerful at the same time. Every step reminded us that we were entering a completely different world – the world of the high Andes.
Quilotoa quickly became one of the most memorable landscapes of our entire South America journey.
